What a Software Conformity Assessment Is
A software conformity assessment is a voluntary evaluation of a software product and the way it is built. Rather than certifying a piece of hardware, the assessor reviews the software's architecture, development process, testing, documentation and change control against the classification society's published criteria. Classification societies such as Lloyd's Register, DNV and Bureau Veritas offer software assessment and certification services; the name, scope and criteria of each scheme differ between societies.
Voluntary, Not an ISM Requirement
The ISM Code does not require the software on board to hold a conformity certificate. An ISM audit examines whether the safety management system works in practice: procedures, records, drills, maintenance, non-conformities and corrective actions. Software that holds those records can make evidence easier to find, but the auditor's judgement rests on the records themselves and on how the crew uses the system. An assessment can still add confidence for an owner, a management company or a class surveyor who wants to know the product is developed and tested in a controlled way.
What It Means for Planned Maintenance Software
For a yacht's planned maintenance software, the assessment speaks to the vendor's development discipline: how releases are tested, how changes are controlled and how the product is documented. It does not certify that a particular yacht's maintenance programme is complete or that its records are compliant. That depends on the tasks entered, the intervals set and the work actually signed off on board. When a vendor refers to an assessment, ask which body performed it, which product and version it covers, and whether it is still current.
