Type Approval (Marine Equipment)

Type approval is a conformity certification required for specific marine equipment categories under SOLAS and class rules, such as ECDIS, VDR, BNWAS, and machinery monitoring systems. It confirms that equipment meets defined technical standards for its intended marine use. General-purpose operations, maintenance, or compliance record software is not normally within this equipment approval scope.

What Type Approval Means

Type approval certifies that a product design meets a defined technical standard for its intended marine use. Instead of testing every unit that leaves the factory, the approving body examines the design, its documentation and the test results of a representative sample, the "type". Units built to that approved design can then be supplied with reference to the type approval certificate. Classification societies such as DNV, Lloyd's Register and Bureau Veritas issue type approvals against their own rules and the international standards that apply to the equipment.

Which Equipment Needs It

Type approval applies to specific equipment categories named in SOLAS and in class rules, typically equipment whose failure would affect navigation, safety of life or the vessel's essential systems. Electronic chart systems (ECDIS), voyage data recorders (VDR), bridge navigational watch alarm systems (BNWAS) and machinery monitoring systems are common examples. For this equipment, the approval certificate is part of the evidence that the installation meets the rules, alongside correct installation and maintenance.

What It Means for Planned Maintenance Software

A planned maintenance system that schedules tasks and records completed work is a management tool, not equipment that controls or monitors the vessel, so it does not normally fall within type approval scope. Under the ISM Code, what an auditor examines is whether the yacht is maintained as its safety management system requires and whether the maintenance records are complete, current and traceable. If an operator wants independent assurance about how a software product is built and tested, a voluntary software conformity assessment is the relevant route. When a vendor mentions a certificate, ask which body issued it, for which product, and what it actually covers.
