Will a flag state or class surveyor reject my PMS because the software isn't certified?

Usually no. Surveyors normally care whether maintenance records are complete, consistent, and auditable, not whether the software itself is certified. The exception is where your management company or class policy specifically requires type-approved software.

In a survey or ISM audit, the primary question is whether the vessel can prove planned maintenance was identified, completed, recorded, and followed up. Surveyors look for complete records, consistent dates, retrievable history, overdue-item handling, and evidence that defects are escalated.

Software certification becomes more important when a management company policy, a specific class requirement, or an LR-classed commercial yacht program requires assessed or type-approved software. In those cases, the requirement comes from your operational framework, not from a general rule that all PMS tools must be certified.

The practical step is to check your own flag state, class society, and management company requirements before selecting a PMS. If they require a specific certification, treat that as a procurement requirement; otherwise, prioritize accurate records, exports, permissions, audit logs, and reliable retrieval during inspection.
