The ISM Code (International Safety Management Code) is an IMO standard requiring commercial vessels over 500 GT to implement a documented Safety Management System. Private yachts under 500 GT are typically exempt, but flag states may apply national equivalents.
The ISM Code, formally adopted under SOLAS Chapter IX, requires operators to implement a Safety Management System (SMS) covering safety policies, emergency procedures, and maintenance records.
For commercial yachts: vessels carrying more than 12 passengers or vessels over 500 GT operating internationally must comply. The operator must hold a Document of Compliance (DOC) and each vessel must have a Safety Management Certificate (SMC).
For private yachts: yachts under 500 GT used exclusively for pleasure are generally exempt. However, flag states such as Malta and Cayman Islands apply voluntary ISM-equivalent standards for yachts over 24 meters.
Practically: even non-ISM yachts benefit from SMS-style documentation. Port State Control inspectors expect to see emergency procedures, maintenance records, and drill logs regardless of formal ISM applicability.
